Coro Amici choir to be joined by klezmer band Kibitz for jazz-inspired concert at Dewsbury Minster

A choir featuring 70 voices from West and South Yorkshire will give its first performance of the year in Dewsbury this weekend.

Coro Amici, which has recently returned from a choral tour to Budapest, will present an afternoon of classical music at Dewsbury Minster on Sunday, April 26, at 4pm.

Led by music director Jane Hobson, the choir will perform a range of classical works infused with jazz influences.

The centrepiece is Missa Latina by the German composer Bobbi Fischer, which is described as “a dazzling fusion of Argentinian tangos, Caribbean rhythms and Latin jazz”.

Accompanying the choir will be Kibitz, a five-piece klezmer band from Leeds, who will also perform their own Eastern European pieces, influenced by jazz, classical and Celtic folk.

Coro Amici spokesperson Viv Jebson said: “The choir was formed back in 2020 and was about to perform Handel's Messiah in Dewsbury Town Hall when Covid struck.

“However, the choir recovered after a year or so and has gone from strength to strength, performing in exciting venues both in the UK and abroad.

“It is fitting that the choir has chosen Dewsbury for its first performance this year.”
